SHSS The Qualitative Report Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Inaugural Conference

The Qualitative Report (TQR), an online journal offered through the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) hosted an Inaugural Conference to celebrate its twentieth anniversary on January 8, 2010. The theme of the conference was, “Academic and Commercial Qualitative Research: State of the Art.”

Ronald Chenail, Ph.D., founder of TQR and co-editor of the journal was the plenary speaker. His presentation was entitled, “Academic and Commercial Qualitative Research: The Best of Both Worlds.” Chenail is a professor in the Department of Family Therapy (DFT) and director of the Graduate Certificate Qualitative Research in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies (DMS). Chenail was introduced by Judith McKay, J.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies. Robin Cooper, M.S., Managing Editor of TQR, doctoral candidate in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) and student in the Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research was the conference moderator. Participants heard paper presentations from authors with forthcoming articles in The Qualitative Report (TQR) and attended workshops on writing and reviewing qualitative reports, commercial qualitative research, and teaching qualitative research, among other topics. Roundtable discussions took place with presenters from the Qualitative Research Graduate Certificate program. Presenters included faculty in the graduate certificate program, Maureen Duffy, Ph.D., Sally St. George, Ph.D., Dan Wulff, Ph.D., and Chenail. The conference concluded with a reception celebrating the 20th anniversary of the journal and included a special recognition for Chenail.

The Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research is designed to prepare academics, professional research consultants, and graduate students to understand a variety of qualitative research approaches and to conduct qualitative research studies.
