Debra Nixon, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Family Therapy in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), was featured on the show Lee Pitts Live in June 2009. Lee Pitts Live is the longest running television talk show in Southwest Florida. It is a five-time recipient of the NAACP Image Award, recipient of the Hodges University Diversity Excellence Award, and recipient of the Southwest Florida Peoples' Choice Award. Lee Pitts is host and executive producer.
Nixon spoke about the initiative "Do Something Different" started by her and promoted by SHSS at NSU as a means to encourage individuals to reach out beyond themselves and embrace the diversity around them. She also discussed diversity as experienced on a national level and the ways we can become a more inclusive nation. Diversity is one of Nixon’s research and practice specialties. In addition to "Do Something Different," Nixon coordinates the Diversity Dialogues to encourage open discussion about diversity across the NSU campus.
