Several faculty members in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) presented at the Dispute Resolution Center’s Annual Conference in Orlando from August 20-22.
The presenters included:
Alexia Georgakopoulos, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR), gave two presentations. The first entitled: “ Understanding Cultural Frameworks: Techniques for Mediators.” The second was co-presented with Rebecca Storrow and was entitled “The Peacemakers of Institutionalized Mediation: Theories to Reveal the Influences of Power in Family Mediation.” This presentation centered on Storrow’s dissertation research study. Storrow is a DCAR doctoral student and the ADR Director of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit.
Judith McKay,Ph.D., chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies, gave two presentations. The first was entitled: “Family Violence: A Typology and the Implications for Mediation.” This assisted participants in obtaining continuing mediation training in domestic violence. The second presentation was entitled: “Angels and Demons: How Mediations Rise and Fall through Narrative.” This presentation was co-presented with Richard Toumey, M.F.A., writer and SHSS adjunct faculty member. McKay is conducting research in the area of narrative as a means of individual, family, and community transformation.
