SHSS Hosts Congressman Alcee Hastings, Senator Jeremy Ring and President Ferrero to Discuss Fulbright Scholars

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) recently hosted a meeting with NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr., U.S. Congressman Alcee Hastings, Florida Senator Jeremy Ring and SHSS administration and several Fulbright scholars currently pursuing doctoral degrees at SHSS. Dean Honggang Yang welcomed Congressman Hastings, State Senator Jeremy Ring and President Ferrero to SHSS to discuss ways to enhance funding for Fulbright scholars.

The program does not however cover all of the expenses for the duration of the course of study and thus some well qualified Fulbright students are unable to attend NSU. Those who do attend often experience great financial hardship when their funding ends before they complete their doctoral degree.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Senator J. William Fulbright, the Fulbright program brings top students from around the world to universities in the U.S. to pursue graduate degrees. One of the stated goals of the program is to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries”.

NSU is one of only two universities in the nation to offer a Ph.D., in conflict analysis and resolution. The mission of SHSS’s doctoral program is to advance the study and practice of conflict analysis and resolution by mentoring and developing practitioners trained in theory, practice, research, teaching, and informed leadership in the field.

Currently there are seven Fulbright scholars completing doctoral degrees in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR).

Three Fulbright scholars were in attendance at the meeting: Solomon Losha from Cameroon, Hassan Khannenje from Kenya, and Ronald Mabunga from the Philippines. Each shared their areas of research interest and their commitment to take what they are learning in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) back to their countries.
