SHSS Faculty Honored as Woman of Distinction

Marcia Sweedler, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) was honored by TAO, The South Florida Center for Jewish Renewal, as a Woman of Distinction at a reception held at the Bonaventure Hyatt in Weston on Jan. 31.

Sweedler was cited for her professional accomplishments as an educator and conflict resolution specialist. Sweedler was a former teacher and school principal who was part of the first mediation training class in Virginia. She started and directed the first office in the Fairfax County School System for conflict resolution and mediation and served on the Advisory Board for the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. She joined the faculty in DCAR in 1996 and was instrumental in designing classes in mediation and facilitation for DCAR’s distance program. She served as Director of the Masters’ program and Interim Chair. Sweedler was the editor of the Fourth R, a publication of the Association for Conflict Resolution and is nationally regarded as an expert in conflict and conflict resolution in schools and school systems. She is currently conducting qualitative research on mediation.
